International companies, including as Citigroup (NYSE:C), have been working hard this week to learn the fate of their Haitian employees this week and keep their survivors safe. Many companies have still not determined whether or not if all of their employees survived. Citigroup has not confirmed if they have had any human losses from the ravaging earthquake, but they have stated that their corporate headquarters in Haiti were destroyed by the earthquake.
Citigroup’s headquarters in the country was staffed by about 40 employees, many of whom worked in the transaction-services industry, which allows businesses to transfer money in and out of the country. There were also a few employees that staffed a retail bank branch that worked in the building.
Citigroup has confirmed that the company’s top executive in Haiti, Gladys Coupet, had broken her leg in the earthquake but was otherwise fine. Several sources have reported that Coupet has told Citigroup’s New York offices that several of Citigroup’s employees remain unaccounted for.
The team arrived at Citigroup’s Haitian office on Thursday to assist in rescue efforts and help the company’s employees. Thursday evening, Citigroup confirmed that a few of its employees died in the earthquake and its aftermath.
“This is a loss that touches each of us,” wrote Citigroup Chief Executive Vikram Pandit in a memo to employees.
